This visualization uses a circle packing algorithm to show where early American foreign service officers were assigned.
The outer, brown circles represent, in descending order of size:

The blue circles are Locations
The radius of each blue circle is determined by how many officers were assigned to that location. The brown circles are sized to accomidate the locations they contain.
A location may appear in more than one state because the boundaries shifted between 1775 and 1825.
